Week 2 Lecture Nan Golding

Week 2 Lecture 

Nan golding is an American photographer she is particular famous of her photos documenting on people of  LGBT images, and of public figures

Nan mostly document her family and people around her, she often lives with her camera takes it wherever she goes, She would also often do self snap, Street snap in the Early 70s.
As i have perviously had seen works of nan golding, i particularly like how she compose her work in the frame, and the modes of working with 35mm film, as the end results often is not what you saw when you took the photographs, the part of choosing which photographs to present particularly fascinates me. As her photos often has an raw edge, and often controversial or has a striking imagery.

Here are some of the test i did with a disposable camera

she would often present the photos with a projection of the slide film she took. Nan after meeting David Armstrong were working together in the queens community in Brooklyn .In 1986 she publish her first book, then her slide show honey on a razor blade

slide film vs digitally mentioned by the lecture on the difference, as film reacts to light very differently to the chip in digital camera especially in natural light, and in the above photos very little post editing went in to the process mostly cropping, slight exposure, or contrast manipulation the photos are usually done, some of the effects were done using double exposure. 

Review photos is particularly interesting as the process of not knowing what you will get and being surprise by the end result, as often the photos you think you got are not the ones you love the most out of each roll of films.
Mentioned by the lecture is this idea of regenerating and giving meanings to photographs after you developed them and re issue ideas on to the photograph.

Nan would photograph people which are close to her, which he or she would feel comfortable in front of, this is often the case in many things we do, even in directing a film, a relationship between the subject and the photographer or in any medium that requires actors or model has to deal with this problem. Nan particularly photography her cousin Seymour.

The lecturer continued and finished on that nan photographs has specific sense of Aura that can quite be put in words to describe, almost like drifting off to a dream. Her photographs often have weird lighting, as mostly are made out of natural and indoor lighting, The focus often would be off, and would be shaky due to lack of light and a slow shutter speed. The way the photographs were chosen is according to her own set of aesestics, the photographs would often taken out of context to attach new meanings to it through sequences of different phtographs.This way of working particularly interested me, putting puzzles together through different materials leading audience through a narrative that could be related in different perspectives. Use of other senses could be interesting, for instance installation combined  with smell or taste. The lecture finishes off with emphasise on staying authentic and interesting to yourself, and often answers can be found if one look closely, observe and analyse what they see.

Few point particularly are interesting of Nan Goldin is her aesthetics including use of light, saturated color, tight compositions, Secondly she only photograph people that are comfortable with her and lastly working backwards through taking the photographs first then give them meaning again through narrative of a slideshow.

This video discuss on use of music in films focusing on Marvel films, as in the recent years music in film has turn to the approach of not necessarily being heard, where you compare to film 20 years or before has music almost leads the audience to the visual stimulation, keeping audience excited, and build up anticipation. Furthermore many film uses dialogue that covers up the soundtrack which in some cases actually makes the scene less interested or evoke less emotions.

Temp music is discussed in the video as well as how film directors would use temporary music from other films for the editor to edit, although to me this is rather the opposite way to work i would think, as the editing would follow some of the rhythmic patterns of the music and sound therefore having some idea of what kind of music to put in would definitely help, as my project won't be a film. There will mostly not be original music composed for the project, therefore would mostly be cover of other songs or royalty free music. The use of sound effects of hearing what you see in film, off screen sound effects to illustrate action or development, music that evokes emotions. all are very crucial in presenting an animation, or an installation, the synchronicity of sound and image
